Le carnet de voyage – Sur le pont d’Avignon

One of those cities I went to visit because friends had advised me to do so. Good advice.

Arriving late, the tourist office had closed but the Palais des Papes was still open and so I booked a guided tour for the following morning there. The tour was totally worth it though the interiour of the Palais needs some imagination. Though the outside remains intact and impressive, 90% of the original medival decoration was destroyed in religious wars, through military occupation or simply time.

What I did not know is that Avignon was independent till the 18th century which shows in city as houses and squares give an impression of awareness of it’s own importance and self-confidence.
